Target Sheets and Sporting Goods going to 75% off!

The clearance sheets, towels and more are going to 75% off today at the Greensburg, PA Target!  I'm getting the kids ready and running up - we need sheets, and I want to look for some bath sheets too.

I'll report back when I get home, they were in the process of marking things down as of 11:30am this morning - thanks to my wonderful Target-loving neighbor :-)

UPDATE:  Ok, towels were NOT marked down any more than 50%....but the sheets, comforters, pillow cases, bed skirts and such were almost all 75% off.  Some, like the flannel sheets were still 50%, and the higher-end brands were still 30%.  But I did find organic cotton and bamboo sheets and pillowcases for of75% off, queen size bed skirt for $3.74ish, and twin and queen sheet sets for 75% off.  The Organic Cotton and Bamboo pillowcases were only $6.74 for king size 2-pc set, 3.xx for standard.

All those sporting goods type toys - kids tents, ball pits, dart boards, etc were 75% off too.  Bean bag toss for $3.08, Finding Nemo ball pit for 10$, Dora bowling set for 10$, and there was a ton more, but that's just what I grabbed.  Sporting goods like girl's soccer cleats, mouthguards and more were also 75% off.

Housewares - like the dishes and silverware were 75% off. Found some cute cookbook holders for $6.xx that will make great presents for my sister and mom...and I grabbed one for myself too!  Almost grabbed some more silverware, but hubby bought some using his ebay bucks a couple weeks ago, so I put those back.

Some toys are still 75% off too - mostly star wars, and some weird toy that connects to an online game I guess...I dunno, not into those.

Winter hats and gloves that are normally near sporting goods were also 75% off.  Found a great beanie with attached face mask for my son, for only $2.xx.

And there's 2$ oyno wyb any 4 Pillsbury Ready to Bake Cookies 11-16.5oz.  They're on sale 4 for 10$  These freeze nicely and are fun to make with the kids without making a mess!

Some other good deals:
Marcal Small Steps Bath Tissue 4-roll pack will be free after the 2$/1 mq coming in this Sunday's paper (1/31 SS).

McCain Fries are on sale for $2.50, not the best price, but not bad for one of the only fries that doesn't contain trans fats.

Nabisco Triscuits, Wheat Thins, or Snak Saks (5.5-10oz) and Premium Saltines are 4 for 8$, and you'll get 1$ off instantly, so $1.75 each.  There are tearpads out there for 1$ off Premium Saltines wyb a can of soup, and there was a great coupon in last Sunday's SS for 1$ off any 1 Nabisco Cracker 6-16.5oz.  That would make the 75 cents a box!

Coke or Sprite 12pk cans are 4 for 11$ after 1$ off instantly.  I just purchased 1$/2 mqs from ebay (they were peelies from the looks of them).  So that would make them 4 for 9, or $2.25 each

Pillsbury Savorings are 3 for 8$ after a 2$ instant discount (must buy 3), and there is a 1$/2 mq coming in the 1/31 SS.  Soooo, If you would get 6 for 16$, use three of the 1$/2 mqs, it would come out to 6 for 13$, or a little over 2$ a box.  I love these things, and I'm going to see if there's any better coupons out there - but 2$ish a box is a decent price.  They're the perfect snack when I'm busy and they give me a sense of pampering myself....I know...it doesn't take much to excite me!

We need Entenmann's Little Bites for my son's lunch box, so I'm happy to see them on sale BOGO.

That's all that's jumping out at me at first glance, looks like a good week though!

Woot-Off! 1/26/10

If you've never wooted, you don't know what you're missing!  Woot.com is a site that normally sells one item a day, starting at midnight.  That items is one sale until they sell out, or until the next midnight comes around.

But!  During a woot-off, they have one deal after another.  As soon as one item is gone, another comes up.  You never know what you'll see on a woot-off.  It could be anything from handheld games for a penny, to professional knife sets for hundreds.  There could be only a handful of a certain item...or there can be thousands.  Some items seem to sell out as soon as they are live on the site...others, known as 'woot-killers' seem to be up for HOURS.

During a woot-off you can order up to 3 of any item, and it ships for 5$ flat.  So whether you buy 1 or 3, you only pay 5$ shipping plus the cost of the items.  Each item ships separately, and you pay for each item separately.  If you buy an item for a penny, you'll pay $5.01, if you buy 3 of those items, you'll pay $5.03....so sometimes it makes more sense to just go ahead and get 3!

I've got many gifts for others from woot-offs.  Some great, some not-so-great.  Many of their items are refurbished, or clearance type merchandise..so you never really know what the quality is going to be.  But if you click on the "Join the Conversation" on any item's page (or community at the top) you can see a thread for each item, and everyone gives reviews and price checks for your reference.

Most likely if you spend any time at a Woot-off, you'll see several LED flashlights, a Roomba, or two...or three.  Sometimes a laptop, lots of gaming mice and keyboards, and sometimes a desktop computer.  Gadgets, butcher block knife sets, and the coveted Bag Of Crap!

What is a Bag Of Crap and why would you want one you ask?!  Why because for just a few dollars you could possibly end up with a big screen TV, or a laptop....or maybe just a bunch of random crap the Woot guys decided to thrown in your box.  Search youtube and you're bound to find many videos of people opening their Bags of Crap boxes.  Some are good, some are bad.  It's a gamble, and that's why so many love them.  I have yet to get a 'BOC'.  Came close last time...got to the order screen and it just kinda hung there for a while and then came up with "Sorry all sold out"    Oh well....there's always next time!

No one ever knows when a Woot-off will come, nor does anyone know how long they'll last.  Today is a fun day, as both Woot.com and Kids.Woot.com (goodies for the kids) have a Woot-off going on.  You can get trackers like Wootalyzer that docks a popup type window that displays the current item, price, and the approx. time until sell-out for you.  So I have the Wootalyzer fired up, showing one line for Woot.com and another for Kids.Woot.com.

Almost every woot ends with either a set of Woot-off Flashing USB lights (they only show up on the site during a woot-off) or some Flying Monkeys plush.  We have a Christmas one,...you put your fingers in his little gloves which are attached to rubber band type arms, pull his body back and let him fly. He lets out a scream as he flys across the room and the kids love to use him to torture the cats, the dog...and me. Yay....

So check it out.  Get yourself some snacks, a few drinks, and get ready to Woot!

Friday's Rite Aid Shopping

Well, despite my children being absolutely horrible today, I did manage to do some decent runs at Rite Aid and Giant Eagle!

RA:
1st Transaction
Olay Eye Roller 21.99
Always Infinity 6.99
Always Infinity (small box) 5.29
=$34.27
- 5/25
-$5.29 Always mq (buy large get small Always free)

24.98
Used a GOS (from my mom) and paid $4.98 OOP+tax

With those two transactions I have $68.25 towards the 'Buy 100$ of P&G get 35$ back' and since I hit the 50$ mark, I already qualify for the 15$ Visa Reward Card.  I'll need to purchase about 32$ worth of P&G product before 2/13 to hit 100$ and get the 35$ Card.  That should be easy!

Plus I can send in for the Olay 20$ Regenerist rebate for purchasing the Eye Roller and Micro-sculpting Cream.   The form has to be sent and postmarked by 2/25/10 (That's Monday! hurry!)

All in all, I spent $5.97 OOP and used 40$ in GOS certificates.  I'll get a 15$ Visa Card and a 20$ MIR, almost rolling my GOS's into cash.  I'm happy with that!
The above transaction are thanks to My Favorite Deals, who also posted them on SD.  Thank you very much!

And since my favorite cashier had put aside some 90% Holiday Clearance for me, I did a 3rd transaction:

1 Ring pop (for the kids, who then decided they didnt want this, they wanted the big lollipops) 88 cents

so about $4.52 for everything - but my mom will give me 2$ for the tea, so $2.52 for everything :-)

ConAgra $17 Coupon Book on Walmart's site!

Found a nice coupon offer from ConAgra and Walmart.  Sign up to receive a "Rediscover Your Balance" coupon booklet.   It looks to be through StartSampling as well, as the link takes to you one of their pages with the signup form.

I don't know how long this offer will be there - so hurry!  Giant Eagle has some great ConAgra sales, so I'm hoping the booklet comes in the mail around the same time as a Giant Eagle Conagra promo!

Spoiled by the Deals and handy tips on remembering deals.

Boy, I can hardly remember back to the days when I didn't use coupons.  I can remember thinking that the big-box stores were the way to go, that my local grocery store was overpriced, and raising food costs were just part of life.

Now I find myself thinking that 80 cents a pound for shredded cheese is too expensive, I walk into the big-box stores and get sticker shock looking at the prices, and my local grocery store is like my second home!

I actually passed up going to the store today because I just couldn't bring myself to 'pay' for the deals!  They weren't free, so I decided that what we have here at the house is good enough until the next deal comes around.

Some people use price books, others go by memory, others use past receipts...  What is the best way to know when the products you use the most have hit their "rock-bottom-price"?  I think it just depends on you.  Myself, I tend to go with memory.  I had started a price book last year, but it just wasn't working for me.  But I know that I won't buy Quaker Oats unless they're free because my family doesn't really use them very often.  And two dollars a box is a good price for the garbage bags we use.  I used to be able to get our laundry detergent for less than a dollar, but do to rising prices the low-price now is $1.30ish.  These are all after-coupon prices of course.

Another handy tip is to get a mp3 player with a voice recording feature.  I actually got mine, a Sansa Clip, from Woot.com.  It's small, easily clips onto the inside pocket of my purse, and fits in the palm of my hand.  I think it was 15$ plus 5$ shipping, and holds 2G.  If there's a catalina promo for buying $X.xx worth of products - I'll walk up and down that aisle in the grocery store and read the prices off for each product.  That way when I go home I can either transcribe the products and prices, or just listen to the mp3 of the list, while making my shopping plans.  It's also handy for remember everything on clearance - I often walk up and down the aisles of Rite Aid, making notes on what items on are clearance and making note to look for coupons for those items when I get home.

You can keep a pen and notepad in your purse, coupon binder, or coupon wallet too.  But my handwriting is horrible, so I like the option of recording instead.  Although I wonder how many customers who see me doing it go home to tell their loved ones about the crazy lady talking to herself in aisle three!

CarrotSticks - Sponsored Post

CarrotSticks - www.carrotsticks.com
CarrotSticks is a great online single or multiplayer game geared towards children in first through fifth grades. You can try it out for yourself as a guest, or create an account for your child.

The game starts with the child customizing their very own character. From there you go to the main single player game where your character is standing in a colorful field of grass. The math problems are shown in the sky, and you simply type the answer using the number on your keyboard. There is easier and harder options, so no matter where your child is in math skills they will be able to play and still feel challenged. The skill level can be changed at any time as well, so if harder is a little too hard, you simply change it to easier. You'll receive carrots for each correct answer. After receiving the goal number of carrots, you're child will receive rewards, the first being a Math Achievement Award.

There is a box on the side of the page where your child can pick an opponent to play the multiplayer game. Occasionally during single player game play, a box will pop up asking if you'd like to accept a challenge from another player. You can click on accept or decline the challenge.

When I asked my son what he thought of the game, he said that it looked very cool and he can't wait to try it tomorrow after school. He thinks he will like it much better than flashcards, and even the computer math game they play in school. Coming from my 11 year old, I take that as a very positive review! He was amazed at some of the other kids scores in the available players to challenge as well.

There are free and paid plans available for CarrotSticks. The Basic plan is free and includes Easier and Harder Addition problems. The paid plans all include Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division in both Easier and Harder. You can pay $3.95 a month, $19.95 for six months and save 16%, or pay $29.95 for a whole year for a savings of 37%.

I think $3.95 is a very reasonable price for a chance to give your child more math practice in a fun and engaging way! My son is 11, and I can see this as being a great way to get him to practice his math skills. Much more fun than flashcards! I try to teach him that math is such an important part of everyday life, and this just give him that extra advantage.

Target Toys hit 75% off today!

Oh my....thank goodness my husband watched the kids this morning while I ran to Target.  I would have strapped them to the roof to get home! (not really....but you know what I mean!)  I have an SUV...but there still wasnt enough room for all the toys today...I hit the jackpot!

I went to two stores, my store is a smaller T, but I still managed to get 2 carts of toys there.  Then I went 5 minutes down the road to the 'Big' T, and found another 2 carts!  Decided I wanted the Fisher Price Microphone thing I saw at the first, and the 2nd didnt have - well when I went back to the first, they were GONE.  Oh I was bummed, it was going to be my nephew's 1st Birthday present *sniff*  But then I spotted a guy with at least 4 or 5 of them in his cart.  Darn ebayers! (I really can't say too much though, I've sold on ebay before....but I would never clear a shelf of every toy like this guy was doing!)  Anyways, when I heard him stop to talk to someone else and ask if she thought, "These would go good", pointing at the microphones - I got my nerve up and asked him if he had seen anymore anywhere....and he actually gave me one!  So he wasn't all bad :-)  Originally 48$, and I got it for 12$.

They had a nice selection of toys though from toddlers through teens.  Boys and girls this time.  Last year at the August 75% off toys sale, it seemed like there was only girl stuff and that was great for my daughter, but not so good for the two boys!  So I was very pleased to find birthday and Christmas gifts for everyone on my list.

Also to note - lots of baby items were marked down 30-50% off.  Camping and Sporting good were still stuck at 30-50% off.  I noted tons of racks of marked down clothes, but I had only one thing on my mind, and that was cheaply priced toys!

So go get em - doubt there will be much left by tomorrow!

Giant Eagle shopping trip - 1/14

I had a fun run to Giant Eagle this evening!  Here's some highlights:

1st transaction:

5 Kraft Shredded Cheese, 16oz bags on sale for $3.50 each
2 Oscar Mayer Hot Dogs on sale bogo@ $3.78 (at my store - some stores have them for $3.58)

There is a cat promo, 4$ oyno wyb 10$, you can get multiples and everything but the Tombstone Pizzas are going by shelf price.  And the shredded cheese double dips with the Kraft buy 5 get 5$ oyno cat promo.
So, total shelf = 32.90, but you pay 21.20 and get back three 4$ oyno cats, and a 5$ oyno cat

2nd Transaction
Then I took the 5$ oyno and one of the 4$ oyno cats and did this:
3 Tombstone 12" Pizzas
10$ - 5$ oyno and 4$ oyno
= 1$ OOP
get 4$ oyno

3rd Transaction
8 Starkist Tuna Pouches on sale 8/10$, but wyb 8 you get 2$ off instantly = 1$ each
9 Old El Paso Heat & Eat Sides on sale for $1.25 - these are found in the Mexican Food Section, and look like Uncle Ben's Ready Rice Pouches.  There is Black Bean, Fiesta Rice and Spanish Rice
I used 6 of the 1$/1 Starkist Pouch coupons available through Vocalpoint for a limited time.  You can print 2 from each computer (I only have 3 available to use...so that's why I only had 6 coupons)
and 9 of the 50c/1 Heat & Eat sides mqs from the 1/10 SS insert
And I used one of the 4$ oyno cats from my first transaction
Math:
Starkist 8$ + Old El Paso 11.25 = 19.25
-6$ starkist - 9$ el paso - 4$ oyno
= 25 cents OOP
I got a 3$ oyn Beef or Chicken purchase!  Totally unexpected!
Details:
Purchase 3 and get 1$ oyn Beef or Chicken purchase
Purchase 6 and get 3$ oyn Beef or Chicken purchase
Participating products are Old El Paso Taco Shells, Dinner Kits, Seasonings, or Heat & Serve Sides.
This promo goes until 2/21

My 4th and 5th transactions were just random stuff we needed, things I had rain checks for, oh and Musselmann's Totally Fruit Applesauce.  They're on sale for 1$ and there is a 40c/1 IP available on Musselmann's website.  That makes them only 20c after the coupon doubles.  Great deal!

All in all I spent 30$ and got:
6lbs of shredded cheese, 2 packs of hot dogs, 3 pizzas, 8 tuna pouches, 9 rice/bean pouches, loaf of bread, pack of buns, 4  things of Tide Stain Release(had a raincheck), 5 packs of Marcal Small Steps Paper Towels (had a raincheck), 5 packs of applesauce, and a bag of litter for the guinea pigs!

Twitter...do you tweet?

Well, the kids are driving me absolutely insane today, so this'll be a short one.

Have you checked out twitter?  It's much more than just a way for the youngins to relay the latest gossip.  Search for 'giveaway' or 'contest' and you'll be amazed at how many companies and blogs use twitter to run contests and giveaways!  You can take part in a 'Twitter Party' and have real-time conversations with people all over, and even companies!  Tonight there was a Healthy Choice Twitter Party.  Because of the kids being complete snots, I just peeked in every once in a while (by watching the #5off5 hashtag), but didn't get to participate.  They gave away coupons and other goodies to those taking part, for simple trivia questions and things like that.  Looked like a lot of fun..too bad the kids had other plans for me!

Oh, and you don't need a cell phone to use Twitter.  My cell doesnt have free texting, so I just follow it on the Twitter.com website, or sometimes I'll use one of the Firefox Twitter add-ons, like TwitBin - it shows all your updates and the updates of those you follow in a little sidebar on your Firefox page.

Click on my user name in the Twitter Update box to the right, and then click on 'Follow' on my Twitter page if you'd like to follow me - I usually just tweet contests and giveaways that I take part in.

Hope your night is going better than mine!

Coupon Preview 101: What is a Coupon Preview and How Would I Use It?

Coupon previews can be very beneficial.  For one, it gives you a head start on planning your shopping trips!  If you're running low on a product, it can help you decide to go ahead and get the item now, or if there is a coupon coming out soon that could allow you to save some money if you wait for a few days.

On most couponing forums there are also ad previews, anywhere from a week to a month early as well.  So you have plenty of time to find coupon matchups for the items you need.  By knowing the coupons ahead of time you can work on your shopping trips even more in detail.

Also it can help you decide how many papers you would like to purchase that coming weekend.  Don't see anything good?  Then maybe one or two copies of the paper will do.  See a ton of coupons you could use?  Then maybe this is one of those weeks you want to get 10, 20, or 50 papers!

BUT, a word of caution.  Coupons vary widely by region.  The coupons I get in the Sunday paper could be better or worse than the ones carried in your paper.  You may get the same product, but different values.  My local grocery stores double coupons up to 99c in value.  So many times I'll get a $1.00 coupon, where someone in an area without doubles may get a 75c coupon.   Or you could get different brands completely.

Larger city papers usually tend to have more/better coupons than the smaller town papers.  In my area I can get 3 papers which contain the coupons.  The large Pittsburgh Paper gets the most coupons.  The Greensburg Paper, the largest in my county, gets similar coupons to the Pittsburgh paper, but often they are missing a handful of products completely.  And the tiny town paper near where my parents live, get about the same coupons as the Greensburg paper, but sometimes may be missing an entire insert on weeks where there are General Mills or other small extra inserts.  Although, that paper is less than half the price of the Greensburg paper, so some weeks I have to weigh cost vs what coupons do I 'really' need.

But a Coupon Preview can also just give you an idea of what coupons will be out there that next week on coupon clipping sites, in trading forums, or on ebay. If you get a value not as good as the ones I show, then at least you know about that higher value coupon and can search it out!

I've also heard of people printing out the coupon lists and keeping them in a binder or with their inserts.  It can make a nice 'index' of the coupons out there.

Hope that helps explain the benefits of a Coupon Preview!

Coupon Previews - a little venting and a tad of rant

I usually post the a coupon preview on several couponing forums, but will be posting them here from now on.

For a little over a year now, I would post the coupons coming in the coming Sunday's paper on Tuesdays.  And yeah, other blogs and sites would copy/paste the list to their site - sometimes giving thanks to me - sometimes not.  Typing the coupons usually takes between 1 hour for a not-so-good-week, up to 4 hours for weeks like 1/3/10 when there were 5 inserts!  So I would get a little upset that someone couldn't take the time to write 'Thanks to' with my name and the forum they found it on.  But being that the list was getting out there and benefiting fellow couponers, I let it slide and never said anything.

Well, that's changed.  All of the sites I was posting the previews on have a TOS clause that gives them license to use anything you post in any way they want - without any compensation.  So if they would copy every one of my posts and publish a book out of them - they have that right according to the Terms Of Service.

Of course, when I read that section of the TOS, I thought more along the lines that if that site wanted to tweet or post the list on facebook, or have some kind of Alerts site - they could use the information you posted.  That's fine.  But was I was wrong!  One of the sites decided to make a whole website containing my work to provide a source of income to themselves.  Some weeks they would give a 'Thanks to', other times not.

I did some digging to find out just who was using my work - at first I thought it might be a random forum member trying to make a buck.  But using my experience as a web researcher, I eventually found out that the preview site was owned by the same owners as one of the coupon forums!

Now, I don't know what upset me more.  The fact that this site just used my hard work without even considering my time and effort, or the fact that I let them do it by agreeing to the TOS and posting the lists to the site! Argh!

Sooo, that being said.  If you would like to use my coupon or ad previews for a site other than your own personal blog or coupon forum - please contact me first!  If you would like to post it to a coupon forum or blog -  you MUST include the copyright disclaimer and/or give credit/thanks to SpendingImpaired or Spending Impaired Momma!

I won't stop posting on forums though.  I am still active on a couple that I trust.  Thanks for reading, and I'm sorry but I really needed to vent!

Stockpiling 101: How does it save you money?

I've been asked many times, "What is a stockpile, and why on earth do you do it?!"  And I have to admit, the first time I heard someone mention stockpiling I immediately thought they must be part of a radical group.  You know, someone who thinks the world is ending, or that WWIII is just around the corner?  I envisioned a basement full of ammunition, generators, and vats of canned food!

In actuality, stockpiling is just stocking up on items you and your family uses when that item hits it's 'rock-bottom-price', enough to last you until the next sale at least.

After couponing for a while, you'll find that most items go on sale in cycles.  Every three months or so is the norm, but others may go on sale once a month, or once a year. Take ketchup for example.  You're lucky to find a good sale, along with a coupon matchup, maybe once or twice a year.  Baking staples you generally have to wait until just before the holidays to find a sale and coupon out at the same time.

Some people think that if you coupon, you can't be brand specific.  That's not true.  We only eat Heinz Ketchup, my son will only eat Eggo Waffles, my husband will only use VO5 Shampoo and Conditioner.  I have no problem stockpiling specific brands.

Ok - so why stockpile?  Note - math alert! Remember back in school when you couldn't figure out why you had to learn math?  Now is one of those times you'll need it!

Take my son's waffles.  He eats 4 a day.  There's 12 in a pack.  That's 3 day's worth.  They go on sale with a good coupon matchup, maybe, every 3 or 4 months.  Now, he's here half the time, so for a month, I'll need 4 x 16 (figuring half of 31 days in a month).  That's 64 waffles, or a little more than 5 boxes.  Rounding up, that's 6 boxes a month, for at least 3 months - that means when there is a good coupon out, and a sale, I need to buy 18-20 boxes!  Oh my! Why would I want to do that?!

Let's look at the math some more :-)

Waffles are normally $2.25 a box
If we use about 2 boxes a week, that would cost me $4.50 a week.

When waffles are on sale, they usually go down to $2.00 a box.
That would be $4.00 a week, a savings of 50 cents.  eh..not very good.

The coupon that usually comes out is 75c off one box, and my grocery store doubles coupons.  So that $1.50 off
If I used two coupons and bought 2 coupons the week that they're on sale, it would cost me $1.00 for that week. Wow, that's a nice savings of $3.50

But if I get 20 of that 75c coupon and use them when the waffles are $2.00 a box,  I would pay $10.00 for 20 boxes.

Even more math - If I paid $2.00 a box for 20 boxes that would be $40.00, and if I bought the same 20 boxes paying full price, it would be $45.00

So by stockpiling 20 boxes every time they go on sale, I'm saving $35.00!  See how all those little cents add up to big savings when you stockpile!?

Coming Soon

Well, I'm going to give my hand at blogging a try..... I'm a stay at home mom of three, and as you can see from the name of the blog, I'm spending impaired. I hate spending money and scour the web every day trying to find the best deals using coupons.

At the end of 2009, I added up all my spending at the four stores I frequent the most - Giant Eagle, Rite Aid, Target and Walmart. My average spending for groceries, per week, for a family of 5 was 75$. This includes our weekly food, and stockpiling. I never buy just 1 of anything on sale! Well, 99.9% of the time anyway :-) Total savings for the year was over $16,000!

So....I guess I'm off to figure out the next deal, and just where I want to take this blog!
